How to Connect Your GoDaddy Domain to Your Tote Rental Website

You bought yourbusiness.com. You built (or got) a website. Now you need them to talk to each other so that typing your domain actually shows your site. That connection is called DNS, and it's the single step we see trip up the most new tote owners. It's not hard once you know what you're looking at. Here's the whole thing.

First, why bother with a custom domain at all?

Because yourbusiness.com looks like a real company and yourbusiness.wixsite.com looks like a hobby. Your own domain also lets you have a matching email (info@yourbusiness.com), it's easier to say out loud and put on a magnet or yard sign, and it's yours to keep no matter where your site is hosted. A domain runs about $12 to $20 a year — cheap credibility.

The two ways to connect a domain

Whatever built your site — Netlify, Squarespace, Wix, Shopify — gives you connection instructions. They'll be one of these two approaches:

Option A: Update DNS records (most common)

You keep your domain managed at GoDaddy and just point a couple of records at your host. Your host will tell you the exact values, usually:

• An A record pointing your root domain (yourbusiness.com) to an IP address, and/or
• A CNAME record pointing "www" to your host's address.

Option B: Change your nameservers

You hand DNS management to your host entirely by replacing GoDaddy's nameservers with theirs. Fewer moving parts afterward, but it moves all DNS control to the host. Your host will say if they prefer this.

You don't choose blindly — follow whichever one your host's setup screen tells you to use. They give you the exact values; you paste them in at GoDaddy.

How to edit DNS at GoDaddy (Option A, step by step)

• Log in to GoDaddy and open My Products → Domains.
• Next to your domain, click the three dots and choose Manage DNS.
• You'll see a list of records. To update the A record, find the one with Name @ and Type A, click edit, and paste the IP address your host gave you.
• For the CNAME, find or add a record with Name www, Type CNAME, and the value your host gave you.
• Save each change. That's it on the GoDaddy side.

If a record you need already exists with a different value, edit it rather than adding a second one. Two conflicting records are the #1 reason a domain "won't connect."

Then you wait (this part is normal)

DNS changes don't flip instantly. They "propagate" across the internet, which usually takes anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours (occasionally up to 48). If your site doesn't load right away, that's expected — give it some time before assuming something's broken. Your host will typically show a green checkmark once the connection is verified, and most of them add the free HTTPS padlock automatically once it's live.

Common snags and quick fixes

• Site loads on www but not the bare domain (or vice versa) — you only set one of the two records. Add the other.
• "Not secure" warning — the HTTPS certificate hasn't issued yet. It usually appears within an hour of the domain verifying. Wait, then refresh.
• Old parked page still showing — a leftover GoDaddy forwarding or parked record is overriding yours. Remove it.
• Nothing after 48 hours — double-check the values match your host's screen exactly. One wrong character and it won't connect.

Do I have to move my domain away from GoDaddy?

No. You can keep your domain registered at GoDaddy and simply point it at your site with DNS records. You never have to transfer it.

What if I haven't bought a domain yet?

How long until my site is live after I change DNS?

Often minutes, sometimes a few hours, and rarely up to 48. It's not instant, and that's normal — don't panic during the wait.

Will my email break if I change DNS?

It can, if you change nameservers and forget to re-add your email (MX) records. If you already have email on the domain, use the records method (Option A) and leave the MX records alone, or have whoever sets it up account for them.
